Not because I didn’t care. Not because I didn’t see the issue. But because I was trying to be… nice. I would rehearse the question in my head—over and over again. “What if they take it the wrong way?” “What if I sound like I’m challenging them?” “What if I create tension?” So instead, I smiled. I nodded. I moved on. And on the surface, everything looked fine. But underneath? Standards were slipping. Clarity was missing. And internally—I was frustrated. Because silence doesn’t fix anything. It just hides it… for a while. And the truth is… it didn’t just show up in one place. It showed up at work— when I saw something that didn’t quite add up. A gap. A miss. A question sitting right there in front of me. And instead of asking, I would pause… overthink it… and let the moment pass. I remember looking at a legal document that didn’t fully align— and telling myself I’d come back to it later…avoiding conflict. But later doesn’t create clarity. It creates distance. It showed up in conversations with leadership— when I felt that internal nudge: “Ask the question.” The one that could bring understanding. The one that might shift direction. But instead of leaning into the moment, I measured the room. I chose comfort over clarity. It showed up in personal spaces too—where there were things I needed to understand, questions I wanted to ask, and especially, people I needed to set straight so I could live in peace. But I convinced myself it wasn’t the right time. I didn’t want to hurt their feelings. I didn’t want them to be upset with me. So I stayed quiet. But it mattered. More than I wanted to admit. Because what I didn’t realize then is this: Avoidance doesn’t stay contained. It spills. It shows up in your work. Your relationships. Your leadership. And over time… what you avoid becomes what you tolerate. And what you tolerate… becomes the standard everyone else follows. I used to think leadership meant keeping the peace. Keeping people comfortable. Making sure everyone felt good in the moment. But I’ve learned something that changed everything: It’s not what you say… it’s what you avoid. Avoiding the question doesn’t protect the relationship— it weakens it. Avoiding the conversation doesn’t preserve standards— it lowers them. Avoiding the moment doesn’t make it disappear— it delays the impact. My shift didn’t come from becoming louder. It came from becoming more aware. I started paying attention to the moments I felt the hesitation. That pause in my spirit. That internal nudge that said, “You need to ask this.” And instead of ignoring it… I leaned in. Not aggressively. Not emotionally. But intentionally. I learned how to ask questions strategically— with the goal to understand, not to accuse. To bring clarity, not confusion. To strengthen, not tear down. And something powerful happened… The conversations I once feared became the very conversations that built trust. Because people don’t just need kindness— they need clarity. They need someone who cares enough to not let things slide. Now, I don’t avoid the question. I prepare for it. I pray over it. I position it. Because I understand this now: Silence is still a decision. And so is courage. So let me ask you… What conversation have you been avoiding? What question keeps coming up— but you keep pushing it down? And more importantly… What is it costing you? Because growth doesn’t happen in the conversations we rehearse.
